Welcome to Subliminal Psyche! Give up all our preconceived notions of reality at the door because this experience will leave you questioning the meaning of sanity. 

 

        The art displayed in Subliminal Psyche attempts to speak to the complexity of the human subconscious and the relevance of dreams within an artistic view of the world. In conversation with the human psyche, all nine artists create surrealist imagery through varying mediums such as painting, photography, drawing, video, and sound work. The sequence of the artworks reflects or parallels the process of delving into the subconscious itself. Through explorations into dreams, nightmares, and intrusive thoughts, the artists seek to contemplate the presence of the subliminal in everyday life and its effect on humans visually and mentally.

 

         Specifically, the themes explored are a psychological illusion, juxtaposing the subconscious and reality, mental disability, mentally constructed barriers, dreams, journeys of the mind, anxiety, irrational perceptions, imaginary stories, mental fortitude, and reality versus fiction. Josh’s paintings allow reflection into what can be improved in life when released from the constraints of the mind, Riley’s photographs communicate self-discovery by neutralizing the concept of self in the form of “sheet ghosts,” Sydney’s photographs explore the subconscious mind and thoughts, while Keela’s drawings reveal the impossible in order to change the perception of violence, natural systems, and mental disabilities. This exploration into the mind created the overarching theme of the gallery itself, and the work made by each artist overarches to collectively dive into the depths of the mind.
